Cryotherapy - What is it?

Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) stimulates the body’s natural healing abilities through exposure to extreme cold. Whole Body Cryotherapy was developed by 1978 by Dr. Yamouchi in Japan as a treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis. In 1984, the German Rheumatologist, Professor Reinhard Fricke, brought Whole Body Cryotherapy to Europe, where it became increasingly popular. Over the past three decades it gained even more popularity as it’s performance enhancing and general health and wellness benefits have become more well known. In the United States, WBC became more well known when the 2010-2011 Dallas Mavericks used WBC during their NBA championship title run. Today many professional athletes among all sports use WBC to improve recovery time and celebrities use it for overall wellbeing. There is no other therapy known to elicit such a powerful, positive and holistic response.

“Cold applications have become “the most important form of passive physical therapy in sports medicine.”
– From the book “Power of the Cold” by Dr. Winfried Papenfub.

We respect your privacy and we only see your face, as the rest of your body will be in the Cryo Spa. Cryotherapy sessions will last between 2 ½ to 3 minutes based on tolerability, but most clients find the three minute treatment to be manageable.

After you have completed your session, the consultant will leave the room and let you get dressed. You’ll be provided with a plush robe once you’re out of the spa.

How does whole-body cryotherapy work?

By exposing the skin to extremely low temperatures, the brain and body react in uniquely beneficial ways as a result of Cold Thermogenesis.  Even slight to moderate shivering can boost metabolism by up to 300%, burn serious calories, and trigger the production of Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT or Brown Fat).  BAT burns the white fat that typically resides in the human midsection, and provides the mechanism by which the body can shed pounds fast.

At the same time, blood is pulled away from extremities then quickly projected back, a deeply anti-inflammatory process which affects the whole body, and flushes toxins from the system.  High levels of oxygen in the blood amplifies the effect, and with improved circulation more nutrients and oxygen are available to tissues, improving energy, muscle recovery, and promoting collagen.  In addition to burning 500-800 calories over the next 24-48 hours, one might also expect a cessation of pain, better sleep, and improved mood.

How does it help me lose weight?

As a perfect complement to diet and exercise, and when used regularly as a therapeutic mechanism, cryotherapy works as a biohack to your body’s systems, accelerating your weight loss goals. By consistently tricking your brain into thinking you live in an extreme cold environment, your body adapts by building up Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT or Brown Fat) and burning at a higher metabolic rate. Shivering burns serious calories, and individuals with faster metabolism consistently burn glucose and shed fat faster that those with a slower burn rate.

What is Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT or Brown Fat)?

BAT is a unique kind of fat which activates and burns calories when you get cold. Specifically, BAT generates heat by burning the regular white fat that typically resides in the human midsection (stomach, butt, hips and legs). Babies in particular, have high levels of BAT to generate heat and keep them warm, but levels of BAT tend to lessen as one ages. Research has shown that a person subjected to cold on a regular basis will increase their levels of BAT. Activating and increasing levels of BAT provides a mechanism by which the body can shed pounds fast.

How many treatments should I do?

In order to achieve the maximum weight loss results with Quick Cryo, in addition to healthy eating and exercise, we recommend 10-20 times in a 30 day in period. If you are seeking to reduce pain and/or are recovering from a surgery or injury, using both whole body and local cryotherapy every day for the first 30 days should dramatically reduce recovery time.  Once the desired results have been achieved on the problem area, a regimen of every-other to every-third day is recommended for regular maintenance and injury prevention.  The more frequently you use cryotherapy the more it will help with inflammation and body rejuvenation. Our CryoHack Solution package is the ideal option for those who are serious about weight loss and pain management.

When should I not use cryotherapy?

The following conditions are contraindications for Whole Body Cryotherapy: Pregnancy, high blood pressure (BP > 160/100), heart attack or any other cardiovascular disease, stent, cardiac pacemaker, deep vein thrombosis, stroke, uncontrolled seizures, Raynaud’s syndrome, fever within the last 24 hours or recent infection, bleeding disorders and cold allergy. Any open wounds will have to be bandaged.

Who invented cryotherapy and when?

Whole body cryotherapy was originally developed in Japan in 1978 and has been used in Europe and Japan for more than three decades. Multiple research studies have been published in medical journals about the effects of whole body cryotherapy, and in many European countries, the treatments are covered by medical insurance policies.

Is it safe?

Cryotherapy saunas or spas have been used for almost 40 years. The only danger is if a client steps into the machine with wet clothing, especially wet socks, as water will freeze immediately at these temperatures. The nitrogen being used to cool these chambers is the same nitrogen that makes up the air we breathe (actually 78% of it). In either type of chamber, the client breathes room-air. For added safety, chambers are also equipped with an oxygen monitor. In order to protect the more temperature sensitive tissues such as hands and feet, clients wear dry socks, slippers, and gloves, which we provide.

Is it comfortable??

Before entering the Cryo Spa, clients are required to dress in protective clothing composed of cotton socks, cotton underwear (for men), and gloves. The treatment is of short duration (2-3 minutes), and the cold is ‘dry’, so it is very tolerable. Towards the end of the treatment, you may get a ‘pins and needles’ sensation, which disappears immediately after the treatment.

How do I feel after treatment?

Our clients report that after each session, they feel good and energetic.

During each session the body releases endorphins, which are hormones that make you feel good and energetic. The buoyant effects from each session last at least six – eight hours and increase with number of treatment sessions. Typically most clients feel immediate decrease of inflammation, improved energy and increased flexibility within the first few minutes or hours that will last for several hours or even days. Clients also may not feel the first impact until the next morning after a sleep cycle – many report deeper sleep and relief from joint and muscle pain and inflammation over the following 48-72 hours.

How does cryotherapy compare to an ice bath?

Whole body cryotherapy treatments result is a very different response from the body. Three minutes of extreme, dry cold reaches only the top skin layers and receptors causing the brain to restrict blood flow to an internal cycle. Fifteen minutes of cold water therapy initially causes the body to move blood to the extremities and results in a chilled lowering of the body’s core temperature.

Is the nitrogen gas dangerous?

No, nitrogen is a non-toxic gas. Nitrogen composes approximately 78% of the air that we breathe. The other components are roughly 20% Oxygen, and small amounts other gases.

How many treatments should I do?

A typical course is 5 – 10 treatments in close succession, separated by 1-2 days or about 3x/week. After that you can take fewer treatments spaced further apart to maintain and improve results. Some prefer a daily treatment over a long time. Memberships allow you to customize your treatment schedule.

Can I catch a cold from this?

No. The immediate cold impact of the cryotherapy session will raise the internal body temperature for a short period of time.

Do I take a shower before or after?

No, you don’t. This procedure is absolutely dry and does not make your skin wet.

What are the risks?

Whole body cryotherapy is very well tolerated. Fluctuations in blood pressure during the procedure can change by 10 points (this effect reverses after the end of the procedure, as peripheral circulation returns to normal), allergic reaction to extreme cold (rare), claustrophobia, redness, and skin burns (only if exposed to low temperatures longer than recommended) have been reported.

Do you accept insurance?

Unfortunately this is not covered by insurance, however you may be able to use a Health Savings Account.

What is QuickSlim Cryosculpting?

QuickSlim uses the HC CRYO T-SHOCK machine to reduce fatty deposits by using extreme cold to constrict the blood vessels.  It is a non-invasive treatment of adipose tissue to induce lipolysis – the breaking down of fat cells – to reduce body fat without damage to other tissues. It consists of a special developed technique where warm and cold are used and applied directly to the client’s skin.

Is it safe?

Yes, QuickSlim is safe, non-invasive and painless.

What is the HC CRYO T-SHOCK?

HC CRYO T-SHOCK is the most innovative and versatile device for the treatment of localised fat, cellulite and “orange skin”, thermo-shock drainage and anti-age treatment.

How does it work?

The treatments lasts for approximately 30 minutes and is executed manually through a slow massage over the selected area of the body.  Exposure to cooling causes fat cell apoptosis – a natural, controlled cell death, which leads to the release of cytokines and other inflammatory mediators that gradually eliminate the affected cells. Inflammatory cells gradually digest the affected fat cells in the months after the procedure, reducing the thickness of the fat layer. Lipids from the fat cells are slowly released and transported by the lymphatic system to be processed and eliminated.

The low temperatures that are used throughout cryotherapy for cellulite reduction actually penetrate under the skin. Cellulite is caused by subcutaneous deposits of fats all through the body that are found principally in the belly, thighs and hips. Temperatures that are below freezing will trigger the fluids that bind fat cells together to crystallize.  This crystallization really destroys the cells and the bonds holding the deposits together. Repeated remedies will slowly take away upper layers of fat. The cells which have been destroyed are pulled into the bloodstream after which they are disposed of by means of the lymphatic system.

What are the benefits?

Clinical studies have shown that this technology naturally destroys fat cells, but as with most techniques, the results vary from one individual to another. The expected effect is usually rapid: part of the fat cells are destroyed during the session while the others will be eliminated within 2 to 3 weeks. It has also been proven to help with micro circulation and a significant increase in collagen due to the thermal shock that is caused by the hot and cold. The result of this therapy is a reduction in cellulite and a more wholesome appearance.

What should I expect to feel?

The treatment is painless, with some clients describing it as rather pleasant. This is due to the massage technique and the session beginning with skin warming descending into the gradual decrease of temperature.

Are there contraindications?

Anyone with the conditions below should not do this treatment:

  • Severe Raynaud’s syndrome
  • People who suffer from very poor circulation
  • Pregnant woman
  • Severe diabetes
  • Cancer

How often can I do it?

Treatments can be performed once every 15 days and lifting treatments can be performed every 7 days. There is a physiological reason for this: when apoptosis occurs and some fat cells die, waste is formed. This will be eliminated by natural routes (blood, lymphatic system, and then urine). Metabolism must therefore be allowed to evacuate this waste without overloading the system.

Do I need to bring anything?

No, we will provide you with everything you need.

How is this different than Cool-Sculpting and other methods of fat removal?

Other methods of fat removal primarily involve necrotic cell death by damaging fat with heat, high-intensity focused ultrasound, or chemical injections. Each approach poses potential technical challenges, particularly with respect to targeting the right tissue depth and unintended damage to other structures close to or within the fat layer. Predictability of efficacy using these other techniques is also uncertain. The Cool-Sculpting procedure induces apoptosis only in fat cells to gently and gradually reduce the fat layer while preserving all other tissue.

Why do I have to wait 15 days in between treatments?

The natural destruction of fat cells will cause cell waste. This waste is passed through the body naturally, first through the blood then the lymphatic system and then urine and this process on average takes 2 weeks.

What happens if i come back before the two weeks?

The results may be compromised by the natural cycle of waste disposal and thus increase the risk of clogging the pathways. This does not represent a significant risk but would compromise the results.

What if I want to do face, tummy, arms and legs? Can I do different options?

In general, it is always advisable to practice treatment on the upper OR lower body in a session.

Are there any side effects?

There are generally no side effects apart from the amount you urinate to increase slightly over the 3 days following the treatment along with the appearance of your urine in color.

In minimal cases there were the following side effects:

In some cases there were localized redness that disappeared after a few hours and in rare cases there was local pain that did not exceed 2 to 3 hours. There may also be some itching without consequences and often this is due to the reaction of certain cosmetic products used by clients; to avoid the chances of this do not use anything before coming in for treatment.

There were some experiences of delayed onset muscle soreness from treatments on the stomach due to unintentionally engaging the abdominals, again disappearing later that same evening.

Who should do this?

Anyone who is looking to lose weight or has stubborn areas of fat they are looking to remove.

Why do you need the gel?

The gel has been specially designed to retain all its qualities of gliding and protection from -30 ° up to + 60 °.

Can I do anything that enhances the treatment?

By implementing a healthy lifestyle and a good diet.

How long do the results last?

Depending on the individual and depending also on their lifestyle and diet, the results last several months or several years. It is advisable to practice 2 or 3 sessions 6 months after the end of treatment to maintain results.

How quickly will I see the results?

The first results are generally visible from the first session and often very encouraging. However, it should be noted that the best results appear from 15 days to 3 weeks after the start of treatment and extend for several months after the end of treatment.
